The Water Puppet Theatre called “Mua roi nuoc" is a must-visit if you're traveling in Hoi An for the first time.
Making puppets dance on the water is a unique type of traditional folk theater form dating from the 11th century. This ancient art form of water puppetry is performed in a waist-deep pool with the puppets made out of wood and then painted or lacquered. The puppet is supported by a large bamboo rod under the water. That's why the puppeteers, who normally hide behind a screen, can control the puppets dancing and slide gracefully on the water. The stage is decorated with colorful flags and spotlights to create a festive atmosphere.
